Wholesome Hobbies

May 26, 2010

Now that it’s warming up outside (or turning into a blazing inferno of heat as it does here in Alabama) some of us will hit the yard sale circuit.  I’m one of those people.  I enjoy prowling the sales to see what kind of old vintage goodies and bargains turn up.

Sometimes you might find that you’re accumulating a lot of stuff that you just like and have no real idea about what you will do with it.  I’d like to suggest turning it into a more serious hobby instead of  just making neat ( or maybe not so neat ) little piles in every available nook and cranny of your home.

I have been amazed at the hobbies I’ve discovered in running my little online thrift store.  This is the outlet for my over zealous purchasing decisions when I can’t find a place for my treasures in my house.  It’s also serving some of my friends and family in liquidating their treasures.  Sometimes when I sit down to offer something for sale, I discover how much of a treasure it really is as a potential addition to someones prized collection.

I have been amazed at what people collect and the stories that go along with these pursuits.  After finding more and more of this information I decided to create a reference category on my blog.  This will serve several purposes.  It is a great place to get ideas for some wholesome hobbies when you find some time on your hands.  It will also help anyone with identification of some treasure or other they have found. Finally it will help me keep track of the vast amounts of miscellaneous information I’m dredging up so it will be easy to find.

What are your favorite hobbies?  I like to go horseback riding, collect model horses, paint, draw, research my family tree and read.  As life got busier when my children came along I’ve had less time to explore them.  I am trying to fold them into something that resembles work by incorporating them into my online thrift store.  The horseback riding and model horse collecting have now become favorites of my daughter. Now we can explore these hobbies together.  Hobbies are useful for stress relief and they also present great opportunities for family time if you can find something of interest to more than one person in the household.

What will you explore today?
